2nd ESO: Mr. Martín Vocabulary and Spelling List 5 with definitions by Jesús Marí



 Spelling list 5
1) To forage: to search for food.
Rummage.
I had to forage for food into the woods.

2) Edible: something that can be eaten.
Not poisonous.
Wood isn't edible.

3) To ruin: to damage something really badly.
Wreck.
A bomb ruined my house and now it’s destroyed.

4) Idealistic: a person wants to do everything perfectly.
Perfectionist.
Pepito is really idealistic he wants everything perfectly done.

5) Lift: to rise to a higher level or position.
Rise.
A lift him of the ground cause he felt down.

6) Mass starvation: masses of hungriness.
Mass hunger.
After the WWII, there was mass starvation in all Europe.

7) To threaten: the act of obligation.
Menace
He threatens him to go to his house.

8) To eat away at: to reduce something gradually.
The sea started to eat away at the ice.

9) Factor: one of the several things that causes or influences something.
Issue.
There are three factors influencing this important topic.

10) To waft: to make something move gently through the air.
The smell of the waffles wafted into my room.

11) To drift: slow movement from one place to another.
Move slowly.
The bottle with the message drifted away, gently pushed by the sea waves.

12) Lazy spirals: to move up wise in a circular and slow way.
My grandfather's smoke goes up in a lazy spiral.

13) Elusive: difficult to find or achieve.
The elusive concept of literature is difficult to understand.

14) Grain: small hard seeds of food, such as rice.
Seeds.
We put grains of rice in the curry.

15) Delicate: easily damaged or broken.
Breakable.
The statue is really delicate because it’s made of glass.

16) Gritty: to contain small pieces of stone or sand.
Dirty.
I've got gritty eyes.

17) To ration: to limit the amount of something.
To give out evenly.
They ration the food in the army.

18) Gruel: a simple dish of grain and water.
Porridge
Poor people used to eat gruel.

19) Bland: with little colour, excitement or interesting.
Soft.
This pasta is bland.

20) To savour: to enjoy the food taste of something.
Relish.
Kico savoured the lovely piece of pizza.
