English B: Text-types: Blog & Personal Entry


                       

BLOGS:



LANGUAGE



* will adopt a semi-formal to informal register

* will have an eye-catching title

* will use first person narration & will show awareness of the reader, e.g. through direct address to the reader

* may include a direct request for comment and response at the end

* past tenses, time connectors, imaginative language, chatty (if type 1)




STRUCTURE

Type 1: narrative –driven blog

Focus: events

Organization: chronological account of events

OPENING:

Beginning of event/s

MAIN PARAGRAPHS:

Description, explanation, thoughts or reflections

ENDING:

Final thought & reflections & ask for comments



Type 2: idea-driven blog

Focus: ideas & opinions

Organization: reasoned argument

OPENING:

Main idea

MAIN PARAGRAPHS:

Ideas supporting main idea: examples, explanations with reflections

ENDING:

Final thought conclusion & reflections





DIARY ENTRIES:



LANGUAGE



* Informal register: not too much slang, and NO swearing!

* First person narration

* Include time when it was written
* Include reflection 
* past tenses (yesterday) or present perfect tenses (earlier today)

* spontaneous language: I wonder/suppose/think/reckon/imagine/doubt…

* Include emotions



STRUCTURE



OPEN, but:

-          PARAGRAPHS: topic sentence, clear focus.

-          FINISH with final thought: concluding statement or open (“I wonder what will happen next….”)
